IET: Five PhD students awarded engineering scholarships up to £10,000

Five outstanding engineering students have been awarded scholarships of up to £10,000 from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

The PhD students, from Imperial College London, the University of Glasgow, University of Surrey, Bournemouth University and University of Cambridge, have been chosen to receive IET Postgraduate scholarships for their impressive work in the fields of engineering and technology.

Alison Gibbings from the University of Glasgow was awarded the IET Postgraduate Scholarship for an outstanding researcher; the largest of the postgraduate scholarships at £10,000. Her research is around laser ablation of Near Earth Asteroids.

Wassif Shabbir from Imperial College London was awarded the IET Hudswell International Research Scholarship of £5,000. His research is around hybrid electric vehicles.

Samantha Simons from the University of Surrey was awarded the IET Leslie H Paddle Scholarship of £5,000. Her studies are based around brain signals and Alzheimer’s disease.

Neil Vaughan from Bournemouth University was awarded one of the IET Postgraduate Scholarships of £2,500 each. His research is around biomedical engineering.

Dr Min Zhang from University of Cambridge was also awarded an IET Postgraduate Scholarship of £2,500. Her research is around high temperature superconductors.
Winners of the Postgraduate Scholarships are selected by the IET Scholarships Committee and they receive their awards at a ceremony. The winners be celebrated at the IET Achievement Awards on 20 November 2013.

Chair of the IET Scholarships Committee Trevor Grimshaw said: “We were inundated with applications for this year’s scholarships, showing that engineering talent is thriving. I would like to congratulate the five recipients, who clearly worked hard and are incredibly deserving of these scholarships.”
