MRSA Action UK Victims and families pay tribute to those lost to MRSA and those who suffered at Mid Staffs

The Charity MRSA Action UK will on the 13th June be holding their Annual Memorial Event at Westminster Abbey.  Prayers will be led by the Reverend Canon White, and we will pay tribute to the many that have died from MRSA and other healthcare associated infections. We will receive a blessing granting rest to those who have died, and grace to those who live to campaign and work to raise awareness and help avoid further suffering from avoidable healthcare infections.

At this year’s Memorial we are honoured to have Julie Bailey and families from the campaign group “Cure the NHS”.  Julie will lay the main wreath with our President Professor Hugh Pennington, in memory of all those who were lost to avoidable healthcare associated infections, and to remember those who were lost from the avoidable events at Mid-Staffordshire hospital.

This, we hope, will be a timely reminder to all those elected representatives from across the political spectrum that we have yet to see any of the recommendations from the Francis report to be implemented to prevent future incidents such as this from happening again.

We know that great strides have been made in helping to bring in measures to reduce the numbers of people who contract infections whilst they are being treated in hospital, but we also know that there is a great deal more to do with antibiotic resistance remaining a problem. Events such as Mid-Staffordshire are a reminder that patient safety must remain a priority with resources being made available to ensure staff at the sharp end are well trained and that the staff to patient ratio is right to give optimum care.

Derek Butler, Chairman of MRSA Action UK, and the Board of Trustees will meet members and friends at the West Gate of Westminster Abbey from 12 midday on Thursday 13th June 2013, and then congregate at the Innocent Victims Memorial Stone for a service and laying of floral tributes at 1:00pm. This will be followed by a Reception with guest speakers at Westminster City Council Archive Centre from 2.00 – 5.00pm.

There will be opportunities for questions and to meet informally with guest speakers and colleagues from healthcare and we very much look forward to meeting everyone who can attend.
