NASUWT looks forward to action on tax avoidance – but the devil is in the detail

Commenting in advance of the Budget Statement on reports today that there will be an announcement on new legislation regarding tax evasion of agencies and contractors, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

"The NASUWT has been pressing the Coalition Government for urgent action to tackle the tax avoidance and tax evasion practices of employment agencies and umbrella companies which are costing the Treasury billions of pounds each year in lost revenue.

"We look forward to the Chancellor's announcement that there will now be action which is long overdue.

"However, the devil will be in the detail of the Chancellor's Budget statement and it is also vital that he recognises the need for the Coalition Government to commit and not cut the resources needed to enforce any new rules robustly.

"Tax avoidance is just one of the unacceptable practices of some employment agencies and umbrella companies that are costing taxpayers dear.

“The Chancellor must also confirm whether the government's commitment to ensure fair play for all workers, including those who obtain work through supply agencies and umbrella companies.

"The Coalition Government must bring to an end the profiteering practices that result in teachers being exploited and in schools being ripped off."
