NUT: Science and Technology Committee Report on Engineering
Commenting on Educating Tomorrow’s Engineers, the report by the Commons Science and Technology Committee, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said:
“The report from the Select Committee echoes worries from across the whole of the education sector that this Government is not creating a coherent policy for 14-19 education.
‘Quite rightly, the Select Committee has grave concerns that nothing constructive is being done to prevent vocational education from becoming the second class option when measured against a purely academic route. This comes on top of last week’s Education Committee report which also warned that the Government’s proposals for the English Baccalaureate would reduce the public perception and value of those subjects not included in it.
‘It is time that the thinking behind the way children and young people are educated moves into the 21st Century. The days when rote learning and a purely academic background were sufficient to equip students for the outside world are well and truly gone. We need an integrated 14-19 system of education which has, as a first principle, equality of access and an entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum for all young people where all subjects are valued.
