NASUWT: Gove u-turn “not a Damascene conversion”

Commenting on the qualifications reforms announced by the Secretary of State for Education, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union said:

“As is usual with announcements from the Secretary of State, they raise more unanswered questions.

“What is clear from today’s statement is the Secretary of State has not had a Damascene moment where the scales have fallen from his eyes, and rolled back key elements of his reforms.

“The fact is he still intends to make the changes he originally proposed to GCSEs.

“All he has been forced to do is make marginal changes which it is clear do not alter the fundamentals of the policy.

“The only certainty from today’s announcement is that he is removing the entitlement of children and young people to have access to a broad and balanced National Curriculum.

“Today’s announcement puts the final nail into the coffin of Margaret Thatcher’s legacy of National Curriculum entitlement.”
