NUT Cymru questions timing of banding announcement

Wales' largest teaching union has questioned the logic of releasing banding information only days before the end of the Autumn term.

NUT Cymru says the decision to publish data on 18 December will result in teachers having the issue hanging over them during the Christmas period, whilst heads and deputies will be inundated with calls at a crucial time of the school term.

NUT Cymru Secretary, David Evans, said:

"The timing of this year’s bandings seems to show little or no consideration for teachers and school leadership teams. Publishing the bandings this late in the term will result in heads and deputies fielding calls from parents with limited time to really address any concerns.  It will also leave teachers in a position where the negative impacts of banding hangs over them throughout the Christmas period.

"Releasing this data in the last few days of the school term is neither fair on school staff or parents.

"We have long argued that these league table-style bandings would have a detrimental impact on schools.  Sadly, those fears seem to have been proven correct over the past 12 months.  The fact that this year’s rankings are being published on such an unsuitable date does not bode well for them being any more of a success in the future."
