NASUWT: International test results justify hard work of pupils and teachers
Commenting on the publication of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union said:
“Coming off the back the Pearson Report in which UK schools were ranked as the sixth best in the world, these results demonstrate how standards in reading, maths and science are amongst the very best.
“Whilst there is no room for complacency, teachers and students should be congratulated for their hard work in ensuring that England remains among the top performing countries across the globe.
“The Secretary of State should take note of the findings which show that experienced teachers, particularly with ten or more years in the classroom, have a lot to contribute to greater levels of achievement. They also show that safe environments, where pupils are learning in schools that are not overcrowded and are well-resourced, also contribute to higher achievement.
“Together these reports give the lie to the Secretary of State’s claims that our schools are failing. They demonstrate that he is wrong to brazenly cherry-pick international data to continually denigrate teachers and trash the hard work of pupils in order to try and justify his discredited ideological programme of elitist education.”
