CIOT: Chartered Institute of Taxation: Pre-Autumn Statement Media Notice

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) will have a range of spokespeople available for comment on the Autumn Statement tomorrow  and the autumn tax announcements and draft Finance Bill clauses when they are published next week, on Tuesday 11 December.

There have, of course, already been a number of announcements on tax avoidance this week, and the Treasury have said the Chancellor will announce further action to close specific tax avoidance loopholes tomorrow. It is also widely anticipated that the Chancellor will announce that tax relief on pension contributions will be further reduced.

Next week’s announcements are likely to cover a wide range of issues including –

·         General anti-abuse rule

·         Statutory residence test

·         Capping of income tax reliefs

·         Working through personal companies

·         Employee share schemes

We are able to provide attributed comment and analysis or background and explanation on tax issues.

The CIOT’s lead spokesperson is John Whiting, Tax Policy Director. A former partner at PwC, John is a well-known commentator on the full range of tax issues. The CIOT also has access to specialists in particular areas of tax (e.g. small business taxation, indirect taxes, international taxation).

The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) is an initiative of the CIOT to give a voice to those who cannot afford to pay for tax advice. LITRG can provide experts ready to comment on tax for people on low incomes and tax credits.

The Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) is the CIOT’s sister body and the leading professional body for those providing UK tax compliance services and related activities. The ATT can provide comment on issues relevant to its members.

CIOT background

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is the leading professional body in the United Kingdom concerned solely with taxation. The CIOT is an educational charity, promoting education and study of the administration and practice of taxation. One of our key aims is to work for a better, more efficient, tax system for all affected by it – taxpayers, their advisers and the authorities. The CIOT’s work covers all aspects of taxation, including direct and indirect taxes and duties.

The CIOT draws on our members’ experience in private practice, commerce and industry, government and academia to improve tax administration and propose and explain how tax policy objectives can most effectively be achieved. We also link to, and draw on, similar leading professional tax bodies in other countries.  The CIOT’s comments and recommendations on tax issues are made in line with our charitable objectives: we are politically neutral in our work.

The CIOT’s 16,500 members have the practising title of ‘Chartered Tax Adviser’ and the designatory letters ‘CTA’, to represent the leading tax qualification.
