RSPCA_Frontline to hold last tweet-a-thon on 28 Nov

RSPCA_Frontline is to hold its third and final tweet-a-thon on Wednesday 28 November to update its followers on real incidents dealt with by RSPCA inspectors in real time.

The last two tweet-a-thons helped to increase followers of RSPCA_Frontline

to 7,000. In the first tweet-a-thon (in May 2011) inspector Tony Woodley, communications and liaison officer for the RSPCA inspectorate, tweeted over 40 incidents between 9am and 5pm – just a fraction of the hundreds of  incidents that were tasked out to the RSPCA’s inspectors, animal welfare officers and animal collection officers.  The second tweet-a-thon lasted an amazing 24 hours when over 200 incidents were tweeted.

Tony said:  “The tweet-a-thons have proved extremely popular in the past and it’s a great way of giving our supporters a real insight into the work of the inspectors as it happens.

“It is only me manning the tweets but I try to tweet incidents, send any updates and answer questions as they come in.

“It is especially important to let people know what we are doing at the moment as the floods affecting most parts of the country are keeping our dedicated flood teams busy rescuing a whole range of animals, including farm animals and domestic pets, from the water.

“We always hope that these events will give a real taste of our day to day work and that more people will be inspired to support us or even volunteer.”

Some of the comments from followers during previous tweet-a-thons were:

@RSPCA_Frontline thoroughly enjoyed the tweet a thon today, makes me sad to think of the cruelty some animals face

@RSPCA_Frontline Some people are seriously sick.  I don’t know how you guys do it. RESPECT

On average someone in England and Wales calls the RSPCA’s cruelty line on 0300 1234 999 every 30 seconds.  The charity received more than 1.3 million phone calls last year and responds to around 1,000 incidents a day.

In September 2011, there were over 135,000 police officers.  In comparison, there were just over 450 RSPCA officers, meaning that there are approximately 300 police officers for every RSPCA officer.

Calls to the RSPCA’s cruelty line are in confidence.

Details of incidents tweeted are edited so no one is identified and will not include a location.

Please don’t send a message via Twitter about animals you are concerned about. To report animal suffering or cruelty to the RSPCA, please call 0300 1234 999.
