RSPCA rescues animals from flood water

RSPCA officers have rescued a number of animals as torrential rain causes flooding across England and Wales.

More than 80 calls relating to animals affected by flood water yesterday (Thursday) and 68 as of 2.30pm today (Friday).

RSPCA inspector Jason Finch, who has been carrying out flood rescues in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, said: “At times like these it is amazing to see all the authorities and charities pulling together to help those in need.

“The RSPCA has been happy to assist where possible and will offer our services in future should they be required.”

On Thursday residents were evacuated from Billing Aquadrome residential caravan park in Northamptonshire due to fears the site would flood.

As many residents have pets, the RSPCA was contacted to help find temporary homes for the animals during the evacuation.

Today (Friday), four horses were rescued from a flooded field in Sileby Road, Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire. The horses were unable to feed and the owner was unable to get through the flood water in order to move the animals.

RSPCA officers waded through the water, caught the horses and managed to walk them to a drier area up the road. From there the horses’ owner was able to load them into a trailer and transport them to safety.

We are also due to check on horses in Granite Way, Mountsorrell, Leicestershire and also in London Road, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, this afternoon.
