Leadership may seem like it’s in short supply these days but not when it comes to UK construction. This is the message from the Chartered Institute of Building who today announce Tim Hare from Sir Robert McAlpine has won the coveted title of ‘Construction Manager of the Year 2012’.

Tim was awarded the title for his leadership on the £165m Quadrant 3 redevelopment project, which took the Grade II listed former Regent Palace Hotel in Piccadilly, London and converted it into a mix of office, retail, residential and restaurant space around a central atrium.  All delivered 4 months ahead of schedule, 20% under budget, and without a single reportable accident in over 2 million man hours during the construction phase.

It is said the greater the challenge, the greater the triumph and this redevelopment certainly had all the makings of a nightmare. It included one of London’s biggest ever asbestos removals, a permanently flooded basement, impossible logistics and the need to keep all internal Art Deco finishes retained.

Chris Blythe Chief Executive at the CIOB said, “Tim’s achievement was made more brilliant by the manner in which he earned it. Quiet, level headed and sure, he dominated the project through collaboration. He recognised the contribution each member of his team and the wider site workforce could make, and gave them the space and the belief to give their best. His inclusive approach heard every voice and wove it into the greater team.”

The project employed the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and 3D modelling for all services and structures to avoid clashes, aid prefabrication and increase productivity and safety.

The awards, run by the Chartered Institute of Building, are widely recognised as the Oscars of the industry and the premier accolade for management in the built environment.  To be held in such esteem requires a judging process of the highest standard. It takes thirty judges six months of meticulous site visits and interviews (including the nominee, client and contractors) before the overall winner can be decided upon.
