BASC: New ladies’ shooting group set up in Cornwall

A new ladies’ shooting group has been launched in Cornwall. Twelve lady guns recently met for their first clay shooting lesson at The Colquite Estate, Bodmin.

British shooting champion Pinky Le Grelle, who has won five European Championships and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, and Lesley Goddard, who has won a number of English, British and International clay trap championships over the years, were mentors for the day. Clay shooting lessons were given by coaches including a BASC-accredited shotgun coach.

The ladies were split into groups and spent the morning learning how to improve their shooting skills. The new Cornwall Lady Gun Group is being promoted by BASC’s tourism project Country Sports South West, which aims to position the region as a number one destination for country sports.  The Cornwall Lady Gun Group will be affiliated to BASC and group members will receive benefits such as shooting insurance plus access to a range of training and activity days.

Annette Cole, senior manager of Country Sports South West, said: “The first meeting was a great success and the ladies all enjoyed 50 rounds of clays courtesy of Country Sports South West. It was wonderful to welcome 12 lady guns to the group and they were delighted to be treated to two shooting champions as mentors for the day. We now look forward to organising monthly lessons for the ladies at various locations around Cornwall.”

“The new group is open to ladies of all shooting abilities, whether you just want to have a go or want to improve your skills. It’s great fun and a great way to socialise and Country Sports South West is delighted to be associated with this initiative.”

Group member shooting fees are negotiated with the clubs and members can either use their own gun or one of the shooting school’s guns. Cartridges are usually included within the coaching price.
