Rethink Mental Illness response to Jeremy Hunt statement on Mental Health Act

In response to an announcement today by Jeremy Hunt that the Department of Health is taking action to correct an irregularity in the application of the Mental Health Act, Paul Jenkins, Chief Executive of Rethink Mental Illness said:

“All of us need to know that if we were ever ill enough to be sectioned, we would be treated according to the proper processes. At this stage, we have no reason to think that anyone has been detained who should not have been, even though the correct procedures have not been followed. We believe that the Department of Health and Strategic Health Authorities are taking swift action and we will continue to monitor the situation.”

Notes to editors

Rethink Mental Illness is a charity that believes a better life is possible for millions of people affected by mental illness.

For 40 years we have brought people together to support each other. We run services and support groups that change people’s lives and challenge attitudes about mental illness.

We directly support almost 60,000 people every year across England to get through crises, to live independently and to realise they are not alone.

We give information and advice to 500,000 more and we change policy for millions.
