NUT: Benjamin Zephaniah to deliver the Anthony Walker Memorial Lecture 2012

We are delighted to welcome Benjamin Zephaniah as the guest speaker at this year’s Anthony Walker Memorial Lecture. The globally renowned poet, novelist, playwright, musician and broadcaster will deliver his lecture in his home city of Birmingham.

This annual memorial lecture is again hosted by the NUT in conjunction with the Walker family and the Anthony Walker Foundation. Anthony was murdered in a brutal, racially motivated attack in Liverpool on 30 July 2005. The lecture is one of a range of activities that keeps Anthony’s memory alive and continues the fight against racist violence. It is held every year during Black History Month and this year will take place on the evening of Friday 19 October.

Also speaking at the event will be Dr Walker – the mother of Anthony Walker – as well as Karen Chouhan of Equanomics UK, National President of the NUT Marilyn Harrop and the General Secretary of the NUT, Christine Blower.

The event in Birmingham will also be the setting for the launch of new educational materials for schools. The first is a schools pack on tackling racist and religious hate crime, the result of collaboration between the NUT, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Anthony Walker Foundation. The event will also see the publication of materials for schools on the persecution of black people during the Nazi regime. These have been produced by the NUT in partnership with the Holocaust Educational Trust.
