NASUWT responds to comments by Sir Michael Wilshaw

Responding to comments by Sir Michael Wilshaw, Chief Inspector of Schools, in his interview with The Times newspaper, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union said:

"It is time Michael Wilshaw stopped playing politics and doing the bidding of the Secretary of State and engaged in a serious debate about how to secure the highest standards and promote excellence throughout the education system.

“It is simply not the case that every teacher has had a pay rise. Teachers are in the second year of a public sector pay freeze and evidence shows that teachers who have earned pay progression are being denied it.

“It ill behoves the Chief Inspector to allow his role to be reduced to being the mouthpiece for the myths and misinformation peddled by the Secretary of State.”
