NUT welcomes broader definition of domestic violence

Commenting on the new guidelines issued on domestic abuse, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said:

"The NUT welcomes the broadening of the definition of domestic violence. We are sure this will encourage people to think about all aspects of abusive behaviour, which blights the lives of too many children as well as adults more directly.

"The consequences of domestic violence are often devastating and long term, affecting both physical health and mental wellbeing. It is right that recognising coercive and psychological abuse is at the forefront of these changes, and that under-18s will be recognised for the first time.

"Abusive relationships certainly do exist between young people but for society to succeed in tackling this problem we need properly resourced support services. Schools are often the first point of contact for victims of domestic abuse so it is essential that the response by local authorities and the police is as effective as it can be."
