NASUWT: The view that exams have more merit than coursework is dangerous
Commenting on the Secretary of State’s announcement on the new qualification system, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union said:
“The Government will have to work hard to ensure that these reforms are not the final nail in the coffin for the provision of a broad and balanced curriculum.
“The Secretary of State needs to recognise that the reforms have profound implications for the accountability system, in particular the future of crude performance league tables at 16.
“Parents will continue to want to support a system which supports excellence for all in music, drama, RE, PE, ICT and other creative subjects.
“This is a key legacy at a time when the country has achieved major sporting and artistic success.
“The Secretary of State must avoid the dangerous view that terminal examinations have intrinsically more merit than coursework.
“The key is to ensure that the assessment method is fit for purpose in all subjects.”
