Unite: Workers on Woolwich ferry agree Olympic award
Woolwich ferry workers have secured an Olympic award of at least £400, following months of discussions and a sustained campaign to have their extra contribution during the Olympics recognised by their employer Serco, and TfL.
Staff, who work on the busiest days (pressure days) during the Olympics, will also receive enhanced overtime payments.
The Woolwich Ferry is a free boat service across the River Thames which is licensed and financed by TfL (Transport for London). The service is operated by Serco Group and carries both foot passengers and vehicles.
The service links Woolwich in Greenwich with North Woolwich in Newham. With Olympic events taking place in Greenwich the service is predicted to be extremely busy.
Unite regional secretary, Peter Kavanagh said:
"The Woolwich ferry provides a really important service and its going to be extremely busy over the Olympic period. There are going to be days where the workforce are going to be stretched to the limit.
"Once again, workers had to fight hard to get their contribution and work recognised. We are pleased that workers have secured a fair award for their extra work over the Olympics."
The award will be paid to all 106 staff at the ferry service, including the road crews, stores workers, engineers, as well as on board crews.
