London home of the IET chosen as Olympic House for Qatar

London, UK, 17th July 2012: The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) today announces that its London headquarters, IET London: Savoy Place, has been selected as the official Olympic House for Qatar. With plans to change the iconic venue in just 10 days, the venue will receive a complete transformation to capture the culture, heritage and sporting achievements of the nation.

Qatar will use all three of the venue’s event floors, taking advantage of the ornate features and panoramic riverside views of London. Using themes including women in sport, the use of technology and innovation in enhancing athletic performance and the successful 2022 World Cup bid, the production team will convert the reception area, tiered lecture theatre and all meeting rooms. All themes and aspects of the transformation will promote Qatar’s aspirations to achieve a knowledge based economy over the next 10 years.

The Riverside Room in IET London: Savoy will be central to Qatar’s celebrations due to its stunning views across the River Thames.

H.E. Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, General Secretary of the Qatar Olympic Committee, says: “The Qatar Olympic Committee is delighted that Bayt Qatar [meaning House of Qatar] at London 2012 will be hosted by the prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology. The 2012 Games will mark a significant moment in our journey in the Olympic Movement, and so it was even more important that the venue for Bayt Qatar delivers on the various needs of our stakeholders.”

“We’re delighted Qatar have chosen IET London: Savoy Place as their base for the Olympics which demonstrates the excellent facilities and location we offer,” says Sean Spencer, Venues and Facilities Manger, IET Venues.

“The team are looking forward to working with the Qatar Olympic Committee to make their stay a time to remember. It is also a great opportunity for us to showcase the extensive capabilities of the venue.”
