MRSA Action UK: Victims and families pay tribute to those lost to MRSA at Westminster Abbey

The Charity MRSA Action UK will be holding a service to remember the many who have died from what are often avoidable healthcare associated infections. We know that great strides have been made in raising awareness and helping to bring in measures to reduce the numbers of people who contract infections whilst they are being treated in hospital, but we also know that there is a great deal more to do with antibiotic resistance remaining a problem that will continue to evolve. Our Charity has seen people of all ages succumb to infections and some have lost their lives, so this is our opportunity to honour their memory and let those that remain continue the campaign to keep infection prevention and control high on everyone’s agenda.

Derek Butler, Chairman of MRSA Action UK, and the Board of Trustees will meet members and friends at the West Gate of Westminster Abbey from 12 midday on Wednesday 28th June 2012, and then congregate at the Innocent Victims Memorial Stone for a service and laying of floral tributes at 1:00pm. This will be followed by a Reception with guest speakers at Westminster City Council Archive Centre from 2.00 – 5.00pm.

There will be opportunities for questions and to meet informally with guest speakers and colleagues from across healthcare and we very much look forward to meeting everyone who can attend.

Guests include our President Professor Hugh Pennington, Emeritus Professor of Microbiology at Aberdeen University, our Patron and former Health Minister, Edwina Currie, Member of Parliament for the Fylde Mark Menzies MP, Simon Clare, responsible for Practice Development, Education & Training, in the standard of Aseptic Non-Touch Technique.

Prayers will be led by the Reverend Canon Ralph Godsall, and we will pay tribute to the many who have died from MRSA and other healthcare infections. We will receive a blessing granting rest to those who have died, and grace to those who live to campaign and work to raise awareness and help avoid further suffering from avoidable healthcare infections.
