BSIA: Information Destruction professionals praise BSIA’s latest ID event

The British Security Industry Association’s Information Destruction section held its fourth Conference and Exhibition on the 30th May 2012 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. The carefully planned conference programme, aimed at addressing key issues for information destruction professionals, and a well-attended exhibition meant the event exceeded last year’s successful outcome, with exhibitors and delegates praising its content and organisation.

The event kickstarted with a warm introduction by newly re-elected BSIA ID section Chairman, Anthony Pearlgood. Anthony welcomed delegates and exhibitors and provided an overview of the section’s achievements to date, including its efforts in raising awareness on the importance of effective information destruction. This was then followed by a varied programme of speakers.

First up was David John Symmers, a Consultant with more than 40 years experience in the recovered paper industry and former Chairman of the Independent Waste Paper Association. David discussed current trends and the future of the paper market, a subject of particular relevance to the information destruction audience.

The second session was held by Martin Hutchins, from the Cambridge Professional Academy. Martin is a regular speaker at the BSIA’s event and this year provided a compelling talk on the importance of effective networking both online and offline, with particular focus on the use of social media for B2B companies.

After lunch, Mark Wormald, from Sandler Training, held a charismatic session on how to win more business by providing new sales strategies, tactics and insights to get results, particularly in a tough climate such as the current one.

Last but not least, Charles Whelan, from HW Corporate Finance, shared his expertise on the acquisition process and what to consider when companies are thinking about selling, including how to identify potential buyers, and how to maximise the value of a business.

The day then concluded with the popular Q&A session with industry experts Robert Guice from Shred-it, Joe Fribourg from Cintas and Darren Brown from ShredPro.

Outside the seminar room, delegates were treated to refreshments alongside an exhibition featuring companies supplying products and services to the Information Destruction industry.

Feedback from the event was extremely positive, with delegates and exhibitors welcoming the improved format. A video capturing comments made by exhibitors and delegates on the day, and including Anthony Pearlgood’s opening can be viewed here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUhM5qtxIDA

Richard Mcilwaine-Biggins, from DiskShred, also attended the event as a delegate and thanked the BSIA for hosting an “informative and interactive exhibition”: “It was a great opportunity to network with my peers and see some of the latest technology first hand. Any time out of the office has to be justified and this was time well spent.”

Derrick Cockcroft, from Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Plc, was in attendance too, and added: "The exhibition, conference programme and networking dinner were great. I particularly found useful the sales training seminar, which provided an interesting and original viewpoint on how to be effective at business development in the current climate."

Peter Vernon, from Alpha Waste Solutions, returned as an exhibitor this year, and praised the event’s usefulness in bringing industry experts together: “We exhibited at the BSIA conference last year and reaffirmed our commitment to it this year. We thought it was an excellent exhibition with very positive feedback from existing and potential customers. It was confirmed at the exhibition that the industry wants British assembled consoles from British made board so as to guarantee the quality and have excellent service.”

Thrilled with the positive outcome and feedback, Anthony Pearlgood commented: “The success of this year’s event demonstrates the appetite within the Information Destruction industry for a platform to share expertise and keep up to date with what competitors are up to. Further testament to this year’s success is the fact that we already have seven exhibitors who have pre-booked to attend next year. I would like to thank our kind sponsors – Global Recycling T/A Shred Tech UK, Vecoplan and AXO Shredders (UK) – the exhibitors, delegates and speakers who attended on the day. It is the diversity of expertise that this event attracts that makes it so popular and useful.”
