NASUWT condemns Westminister’s arrogant pensions imposition in Scotland
Responding to reports that the Westminster Government is set to impose, without consultation, the direct link between the normal pension age and the state pension age on public sector workers in Scotland, despite the fact that responsibility for these matters is devolved to the Scottish Government, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the fastest growing teachers' union in Scotland and the largest in the UK, said:
"Not content with plundering the pensions of public service workers across England and Wales, the Westminster Government is clearly intent on ensuring that there is equity of misery right across the UK.
"To their credit, ministers in Scotland had stated they would be disposed to as much positive variation of the Westminster Coalition’s plans for pension changes as possible and discussions with NASUWT and other unions had already started.
"It is now clear that they may not be given the option.
"Reasonable and inclusive policy development is an anathema to the Westminster Government and its decision to impose pension changes across the UK is entirely consistent with the arrogant approach it takes on matters affecting the lives of working people.
"I fear that the proposed imposed change on the pension age is a sign of worse to come for the pensions of teachers and other public service workers in Scotland."
