Future of education initiatives is in jeopardy, warns NASUWT

Commenting on research by Stirling University that the Curriculum for Excellence is causing teachers in Scotland anxiety, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the fastest growing union in Scotland, said:

"This research confirms the Union's own feedback from teachers.

"When the curriculum changes were introduced there was a great deal of goodwill exhibited by teachers to support its implementation, even though there was deep concern about the timescale and the potential for a significant increase in workload.

"However, instead of the Government and employers appreciating the work teachers were putting in, they colluded in worsening their terms and conditions of service.

"A pay freeze, imposed pension contributions, deep concerns about further adverse changes to working conditions and heightened fears of jobs loss have seen morale plummet.

"Unless this situation is taken seriously by the Government and employers, and teachers are supported rather than penalised, the future of all new education initiatives is in jeopardy."
