NUT: Most allegations against school staff are false or even malicious, made when teachers intervene to restore good behaviour at school
Commenting after the debate on Motion 19, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers? union, said;
Teachers careers can be ruined by false and malicious allegations made against them. The process for investigating and considering allegations is often drawn out, and far too frequently teachers are suspended for long periods on flimsy and unsubstantiated evidence.
The NUT welcomes new provisions for anonymity, but wants these to go further, so that false and malicious allegations cannot blight a teacher's career by being kept on record.
Most allegations against school staff are false or even malicious, made when teachers intervene to restore good behaviour at school. Only a small percentage result in a police investigation and a tiny number conclude with a conviction.
It is important that all are aware of the consequences of such allegations on teachers and their families lives, so that such allegations cannot be made with impunity.
