BSIA is a ‘listening’ organisation, say 98% of members
A recent survey by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has revealed that 98% of members who provide the BSIA with feedback feel that it is taken on board and responded to accordingly.
The survey, conducted in the first quarter of this year, provided all BSIA members from across the 18 sections of membership with an opportunity to have their say on the Association’s overall performance, achievement of key objectives and the benefits of membership, and has revealed an interesting insight into member perceptions, which the BSIA will now use to inform its future strategy for 2012-13.
More than a third of members stated that they regularly provide the BSIA with feedback or comments, and over 98% of these members reported that the feedback they give is taken on board and responded to by the BSIA, showing that active participation is the key to gaining the most benefit from Association membership.
“Listening to our members and responding to their needs is key to ensuring that the BSIA remains the representative voice of our industry, and it’s pleasing to see that our members recognise our willingness to listen and act upon their views.” comments Chief Executive, James Kelly.
On the ongoing value of trade associations for security companies, James adds: “While organisations such as inspectorates and industry regulators play a vital role in ensuring their inspected companies work to high standards of quality and customer service, they are not membership organisations and as such are not primarily responsible for representing the views of those working within the industry.
“As a true membership organisation, the BSIA represents its members and maintains their position at the forefront of the industry by working closely with industry stakeholders, a role it has fulfilled consistently since its formation in 1967.”
The latest survey results also support the objectives outlined by the BSIA's Chairman, Julie Kenny CBE DL, in her speech at the Association’s Annual Lunch last summer. Outlining her plans for transforming the BSIA's governance structure, Kenny promised to create "an up-to-date, flexible and dynamic organisation that's run by its members, for its members."
James Kelly adds: “In an ever-changing industry, trade association membership is a vital investment to ensure that businesses operating in the security sector, whatever their size, are accurately represented as the nature and shape of the industry continues to shift.”

James Kelly concludes: “With responsible security companies being the first to embrace change, some might say that now, more than ever, such a dynamic industry needs a strong trade body to liaise with and bring together the inspectorates, key stakeholders and industry companies to ensure their voices are heard and offer what the customer wants.”
