NUT: There are twice as many young black men than young white men unemployed

Commenting after the debate on motion 41 on the economy, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers? union said;

?Delegates at NUT Conference have lambasted the failed economic policies of this Government. We are in the midst of the tightest squeeze of government spending since 1945 and the biggest cut in education spending since the 1950s. The Government refuses to make the banks pay for the crisis they caused or address the serious issue of tax avoidance. Instead the Government attacks the most vulnerable in society.

These cuts are hurting all public sector workers and the children and young people teachers teach. Education for 16-19 year olds and for under-5s will be cut by a fifth and most schools will see a real terms cut in funding. These failed economic policies have a disproportionately adverse impact on women, young people and the disabled. There are twice as many young black men than young white men unemployed.

The NUT believes that taxing the banks is a fairer way of raising revenue than attacking the public sector, increasing VAT and cutting the taxes of the richest. The Government should introduce a Robin Hood Tax, which could raise £20 billion a year in the UK alone.
