NUT members in Nottingham City strike over 5 term year plan

National Union of Teachers members in maintained schools in Nottingham have voted to take three days of strike action to oppose the plans to introduce a five term year. Over 50% of members voted in the ballot and nearly 90% of members voted for strike action.

The days of action will be the 29 March and the 17 and 25 of April.

As part of their plan, the Council has threatened to sack any school employee who does not agree to accept the changes to their contract – even though the consultation process has not yet finished.

The Council’s own public consultation survey found that approximately half of all respondents did not agree with the Council’s proposals.

Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“To threaten to sack teachers while a consultation into plans to introduce a five term year is still on-going is an unacceptable move by Nottingham Council. They have a duty to listen to the views of everyone, not to issue threats, the sole purpose of which can only be intimidation. NUT members are left with no option but to take strike action to protest about this flagrant misuse of position and oppose the Council’s plans”.
