bpas supports 40 Days of Choice campaign

bpas will be supporting the 40 Days Of Choice campaign, an initiative organised by pro-choice groups to coincide with the 40 days For Life anti-abortion protests outside UK clinics between 22 February and 1 April.

Each day will see suggestions for small, positive steps to increase awareness of abortion rights and advocate for better access to reproductive health services.

The 40 Days For Life protesters who picket bpas centres during this period every year are always unwelcome, but this year’s campaign comes amid a rise in the prevalence and aggressiveness of anti-abortion activity outside UK clinics. At a political level, the government is involving anti-abortion MPs and groups in setting abortion policy, while every year bpas provides care to women from Northern Ireland who are still unable to access the services they need at home – 44 years after abortion was legalised.

Opinion polls consistently show the majority of people support a woman’s right to choose, and this supports cuts across lines of faith and politics. There is widespread understanding that women need to be able to control the timing and size of their families, and that abortion is an important back-up to contraception if women are to be able to make genuine choices about their lives.
