Tax experts issue guide to checking your 2012/13 PAYE Code

Between mid-January and early March 2012, HMRC are issuing PAYE Coding Notices for the 2012/13 tax year. The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) has issued a guidance note to help taxpayers to check their code is correct.

The guide is available from the LITRG website via the link: http://www.litrg.org.uk/News/2012/check-your-2012-13-paye-coding-notice

There is additional information at: http://www.litrg.org.uk/low-income-workers/employed/checking-your-coding.htm

The guide includes sections on:

    PAYE Codes – the basics
‘Underpayment restrictions’ relating to tax for an earlier year
How self-assessment taxpayers can check their PAYE Codes online
Telephoning HMRC and issues for people with disabilities

Kelly Sizer, LITRG Technical Officer and the author of the guide said:

“You should always check what tax is being taken off your income and query it with HMRC if you do not understand or think it might be wrong.”

Notes to editors

HMRC anticipate that for the coming tax year, 2012/13, they will issue around 17 to 18 million PAYE codes to employees and pensioners. These began to be issued in mid-January and will continue to be sent out until March 2012.

LITRG are keen for their guidance to have the widest possible circulation and media outlets are encouraged to link to it and to reproduce extracts from it, provided these are attributed to LITRG.

Experts from LITRG are available for interview or to provide background information. Please contact them via the contact details at the top of the page.

The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) is an initiative of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) to give a voice to the unrepresented. Since 1998 LITRG has been working to improve the policy and processes of the tax, tax credits and associated welfare systems for the benefit of those on low incomes.

5. The CIOT is a charity and the leading professional body in the United Kingdom concerned solely with taxation. The CIOT’s primary purpose is to promote education and study of the administration and practice of taxation.
