NASUWT: Education must be priority in the global fight against poverty

Commenting on Gordon Brown’s call for a global education fund and a co-ordinated plan for universal primary education, Patrick Roach, Deputy General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, and a board member of Education International, said:

“Education is a fundamental human right that must be a priority in the global fight against poverty and inequality.

“The reality is that despite a great deal of rhetoric, progress towards meeting the internationally agreed goal of universal access to education is already stalling.

“With some 68 million children missing out on access to primary education, now is the time for a renewed international commitment in this area.”
