NASUWT: Secretary of State is prejudging the regulator’s view

Commenting on the story in the Daily Telegraph that unfair examination advice has been given to teachers by chief examiners, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

“What is the point of the Secretary of State calling upon Ofqual to investigate when he has already declared that the examination system is 'discredited'?

“The correct process would be for the Daily Telegraph to submit its evidence to the independent regulator Ofqual and for Ofqual to investigate.

“The Secretary of State is seeking to prejudge the review. It is for Ofqual to evaluate the integrity of the examination system not Michael Gove.

“Ofqual's statutory independence will now be put to the test.

“If Ofqual is to retain credibility it must resist any pressure designed to compromise its integrity.

“Until Ofqual sets out it findings, any further politically-motivated speculation on this issue is totally inappropriate.”
