IET: New Engineering Prize will inspire future generations
Today’s announcement of a new £1m prize for engineering will inspire a future generation of engineers, says Europe’s biggest engineers’ body.
Paul Davies, Head of Policy at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, said: “Engineering affects everyone everywhere in the world every day. Unfortunately, though, the achievements and importance of engineers is all too often overlooked.
“I believe that the Queen Elizabeth Prize, backed by British business, will inspire a greater awareness of engineering achievement. This is essential to solving some of the world’s problems and creating sustainable economic growth.”
The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering has been launched today to enthusiastic support from the engineering profession, engineering industry and across the main political parties for its mission to identify and celebrate an outstanding advance in engineering that has created significant benefit to humanity.
The £1 million Prize will be awarded biennially in the name of Her Majesty the Queen to an individual or team of up to three people, of any nationality, directly responsible for advancing the application of engineering knowledge.
As well as recognising and celebrating the best, the Prize will provide an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate how engineers and engineering are making a real difference across the world.

The IET supports the future generation of engineers through an annual £200,000 fund for scholarships as well as a schools’ programme.
