IET: Cyber-Security Experts Win Top Award

Cyber Security experts have picked up a prestigious award for solutions that help avoid vehicle-on-vehicle collisions

A Premium Award from The Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) was scooped by internet security experts, J.T. Isaac of the Universidad de Carabobo in Venezuela, S. Zeadally of the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, US, and J.S. Ca’mara of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in Spain.

The IET, Europe’s largest engineering body, which awards the prizes, recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to their field and who have gained international respect from their peers.

The IET recognised Isaac, Zeadally, and Ca’mara’s for their solutions to VANET (Vehicular ad-hoc network) security threats, published in the IET Communications journal.

VANET is a technology that uses moving vehicles to create a mobile network to help prevent collisions.

The distribution of safety-related information (such as turn warnings, speed limit information and so on) is a major application of VANET. Since safety information may contribute to the survival of people driving the vehicles participating in a VANET, system security is of crucial importance.

The first systems to employ a VANET will be emergency service transport. VANET will enable them to communicate with each other for safety purposes.

Carey Chapman at the IET said, “We were delighted to award the Premium Prize to the authors of a research paper that didn’t just identify problems, but also presented the solutions. This will surely have a positive impact on this important, emerging technology.”
