BSIA: Security Regulation Alliance reflects on a successful year

The newly-rebranded Security Regulation Alliance, celebrated its one year anniversary by reinforcing its support for a new regulatory regime for the security industry at this week’s Security Industry Authority (SIA) Stakeholder Conference in Sheffield.

A presentation made by Alliance Chairman, James Kelly, reflected on the progress made by the Alliance, alongside the SIA and government stakeholders, in determining a way forward for industry regulation since the Home Office’s initial announcement last October that the SIA was to be abolished as part of the government’s ‘Bonfire of the Quangos’.

“Since its formation a year ago, the Security Regulation Alliance has succeeded in providing a representative voice for over 80% of the regulated security industry.” Commented James Kelly. “By consulting widely with industry, we have devised a set of strategic principles upon which we feel the new regulatory regime should be built. In cooperating fully with the SIA and Government, the Alliance aims to help establish a consistent regulatory regime that improves public safety, perception and trust in our industry.

“The introduction of regulation has contributed significantly to the professionalisation of our industry, and as such, we look forward to assuming more responsibility for the regulation of security services under a new scheme of business licensing. Continuing our work alongside the SIA, the Security Regulation Alliance will provide interim support to the SIA’s new Commercial Group, helping to ensure that our industry is fully represented as further decisions are made and the future landscape of regulation takes on a more significant level of detail.”

In recognition of its existence as a single-issue body focusing solely on regulation within the security industry, the former Security Alliance changed its name to the Security Regulation Alliance earlier this month.
