NUT comment on Ofqual’s report on Controlled Assessment
Commenting on Ofqual’s Evaluation of the Introduction of Controlled Assessment report, published today, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union said:
"The NUT continues to have concerns over the introduction of controlled assessments in GCSEs. This is echoed by the findings of our recent survey of teachers conducted jointly with UCU.
"What may at first glance seem a straightforward assessment procedure is hampered by impracticalities, with too many question marks attached. For example, how many materials can students bring in with them? What happens if a student is absent on that day? What about SEN pupils – how can they have extra support or time under controlled conditions? The workload implications for teachers are significant too.
"As with so many other initiatives, the intentions were good but it was undermined by a lack of extra support for schools to help them move to the new arrangements. Until the experience and expertise of the profession is genuinely taken into account, initiatives such as this will continue to undermine schools’ efforts to meet the needs of all their students."
