Unite members march on Tory conference

Unite members from across the UK will join the march against Tory-led cuts set to swell the streets of Manchester this Sunday (October 2nd).

WHEN: 1pm, Sunday, October 2nd, 2011
WHERE: Liverpool Road off Deansgate, Manchester

Workers will be joining the TUC march for the alternative demonstrating outside the Conservative conference against that party's assaults on the nation's public services.

Unite is among those unions that have consistently called for an economic alternative based around investment in jobs and communities in order to grow the nation back to financial health.

Speaking ahead of the march, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said:

"The deeper the cuts, the more harm this government does to our economy. Our NHS, our welfare state and our access to justice and education are all under assault from a government which has no understanding of or care for the importance of our public services to our communities.

"These attacks are totally political. The evidence that their strategy is a calamitous failure mounts up daily but still they cut – and they will not stop until they have dismantled what generations of this country have held dear.

"People are now questioning this government's competence, and getting angry about the choices it is making. This protest is only the beginning. We will keep doing so until they stop this economic kamikaze mission. This chaotic coalition can destroy itself by all means, but we will not let them take our country and our services with them.”

Len McCluskey is one of the speakers at this Sunday's march. The march will move off at 1pm from Liverpool Road in Manchester, culminating in a rally close to the conference centre where the Tories will be meeting.
