Mayhew Animal Home: Lord Mayor to host exclusive charity event to support veterans, animals and children

The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Susie Burbridge is hosting a special fundraising evening for three local charities supported by The Ritz hotel and the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Those taking part will have the chance to win a piece of history* and some ‘money can’t buy’ experiences.

Theatregoers purchasing limited edition (220) Royal Circle tickets for a preview performance of The Lion in Winter at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on Thursday 10th November will be treated to a champagne reception and entered into an exclusive raffle. All funds raised by Mayor’s Gala ticket sales will go to The Mayhew Animal Home, Veteran’s Aid and Kidscape.

The Lion in Winter stars Mayhew Patron Joanna Lumley and Robert Lindsay

An even more exclusive event, for just 60 guests, will be hosted at The Ritz where an auction of ‘dream come true’ prizes will be held.

The Lord Mayor said, “Please help me to support these three brilliant local charities. They help those who are in crisis. They have no large corporate machine behind them and yet they make such a difference in real terms to those living on the streets or experiencing traumatic situations in Westminster.

“Ex-Servicemen and women who end up in serious difficulties are given a hand up, not a handout. Dogs and cats that have been found homeless, neglected, abused, in need of desperate hospital attention or victims of dogfights are given a home and care. Children who have been bullied at school, experienced cyber bullying, grooming or sexual abuse are offered a helpline and given practical support”.

The donated auction prizes include an overnight sea trip for two on a warship, a chance to record at Universal Records and the opportunity to own a piece of motoring history.
The Lord Mayor added “It makes me very proud to have a team around me who are giving up their time and working at their own expense to put on this special evening to raise funds for these charities. Please join us and help them."

Mayhew Animal Centre CEO Caroline Yates said, "We are honoured to have been chosen as one of The Lord Mayor's charities of the year and are really excited about this exclusive Gala Event as it is being held during The Mayhew's 125th anniversary year. Our charity has been working from the same site since 1886, helping homeless dogs and cats in London. Money raised from this fantastic evening of entertainment will mean we can continue to provide help for many more animals and their carers in need."

CEO of Veterans Aid Dr Hugh Milroy said, “We are bowled over by the generosity of all involved in this event. Our charity has operated from central London for nearly 80 years offering help to veterans in crisis. We take about 2,000 calls for help each year, provide 20,000 nights of accommodation and put an average of four people a month through successful rehab. We are the A&E of the veteran’s charity world. Our solutions are provided to individual need and our help process is instant.”

Kidscape Director Claude Knights said “Kidscape feels very privileged to have been chosen as one of the Lord Mayor of Westminster's three charities. Many of the children who attend our workshops have been so severely bullied that they are suicidal, self-harming, or both. Money raised through the wonderful Gala event will help Kidscape to continue its vital work.”
