TACT: Criminalising Children in Care (Liberal Democrat Conference)

The Adolescent and Children’s Trust (TACT) is the UK’s largest charity provider of fostering and adoption services. We also campaign on behalf of children in care across the UK.

TACT has received a Big Lottery Grant to work in partnership with the University of East Anglia (UEA), conducting research into the links between care and the criminal justice system. This research sets out to examine the truth about perceptions of care and crime, to identify good practice and to make recommendations to help children in care avoid unnecessary criminalisation.

Working with a range of Local Authorities in England and involving interviews with 120 young people, this is the most extensive study into care and criminality undertaken in the UK. The research is due to be launched in early 2012.

The initial findings have been completed. TACT is using the party conference season to discuss these results with key political stakeholders so that this input can be fed into the final research. We are putting on a small invitation only roundtable event at the Liberal Democrat party conference to be held at 1pm on Sunday 18th September, IPCC, Birmingham.

The event is invitation only so please contact k.rae@tactcare.org.uk if you wish to attend.
