NUT: TUC Pensions Debate

Commenting on this morning’s debate at TUC Congress on pensions, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said this:

“The fact that we now have yet more unions balloting for strike action is a clear indication that there is little or no faith in this Government's approach to public sector pensions. Negotiations have not been conducted in a meaningful fashion and facts about the sustainability and affordability of our pensions have been ignored.

“The Government's attempt to ride roughshod over public sector pensions has united the trade union movement. The NUT, alongside our sister teaching unions, will be lobbying Parliament on October 26th. Failure on the part of Government to listen will result in further co-ordinated industrial action organised through the auspices of the TUC.

“Enough is enough. United we can win. These are our pensions. They are fair. We must stand together, we must defend them and we must win on this for the whole of the public sector.”
