Unite vows to resist Tory attack on probation services
National Offender Management Services has announced that the probation service has been opened up to privatisation. The government intends to put out all Probation work to competitive tender.
All aspects of probation work could now be privatised, including offender reports, case management, hostels and interventions.
Unite, the union which represents probation managers, has vowed to work with its sister unions to resist the Tory-led government's attack on the probation service.
Unite national officer, Peter Allenson, said:
"Unite is deeply concerned that National Probation Service is being opened up to the private sector. Unite will be working with its sister unions to endeavour to resist these attacks on the probation service which could lead to services being fragmented and undermined.
“The government's plans are a disaster waiting to happen. Applying the rules of the market place to offender management is absolute madness and Unite will be doing everything possible to highlight the major weaknesses in the government's plans."
