BSIA: Award-winning performance from two BSIA Directors

Two leading lights from the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) have been recognised with prestigious industry awards for their ongoing commitment and outstanding contribution to the security industry.

At the Association’s Annual Luncheon, held last week at the London Hilton on Park Lane, the BSIA’s Project Director – 2012, David Evans, was presented with the Infologue.com Building the Future award, a joint initiative between leading industry publications SMT Online and Infologue.com. David was chosen for this prestigious award in recognition of his work on the Bridging the Gap initiative, a programme developed by the BSIA in conjunction with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and the Further Education Sector led by North Hertfordshire College to ensure sufficient numbers of qualified security staff for the Games. The legacy for the security sector is that it opens a new route for young people in Further Education to careers in the security industry, direct from their local college.

David said: "I am delighted to receive this award for the pioneering work in Bridging the Gap, but it is truly a team effort, which has included invaluable support from Skills for Security and the Security Industry Authority. Much is still to be done but we believe the legacy for the industry could be significant, with the Further Education sector utilising their significant resources to develop security courses as part of their public uniformed service syllabus. Comprehensive training like this is something the industry has always aspired to."

Meanwhile, in June, the BSIA’s Technical Director, Alex Carmichael, was presented with Professional Security Installer magazine’s Premier Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Security Industry. Alex’s dedication to the continual development of industry standards both in the UK and across Europe earned him this award in recognition of his work representing the industry on various UK and European standards committees, acting as UK representative on various Cenelec and Euralarm committees to monitor EU directives and working closely with other industry organisations such as the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and its Scottish counterpart, ACPOS. Commenting on his award, Alex said: “It was a privilege to receive the PSI award, which I accept on behalf of the whole of the BSIA technical team and the BSIA members who give up considerable time to raise the technical standards within our industry and ensure that the BSIA is fully involved in the standardisation process, in the UK, Europe and on the world stage.”

BSIA Chief Executive, James Kelly, comments: “I am extremely proud that both Alex and David have received such esteemed recognition for their ongoing hard work and dedication. Their contribution to the BSIA, and to the industry as a whole, is testament to the true value of trade association membership, with our members benefiting directly from their award-winning experience and expertise.”
