Unite’s reaction to Jaguar’s announcement on job creation from £2 billion worth of supply contracts

Unite, Britain’s biggest union, has welcomed news that Jaguar’s new Evoque model will generate investment and jobs.

Roger Maddison, Unite national officer said:

“We very much welcome the creation of new manufacturing jobs – they are desperately needed. Tata the parent company of JLR are to be congratulated for their commitment to the UK. The workforce also deserves much credit for the role they played in helping the company weather the recession.
“However it is totally wrong for Business Secretary, Vince Cable and the government to try to claim any credit for themselves. The new Evoque was secured in Halewood during the last Labour government with a £2bn investment from the parent company Tata.

“The present government have a policy of watching manufacturing from the sidelines. They have scrapped the RDAs and are lucky that the weak pound helps exports. But nobody will be fooled about where the credit for today goes. It goes to JLR for investing in the UK and to a dedicated workforce producing a quality product.”
