UNITE: Private companies can not be allowed to profit from people who give blood for free

Unite, Britain’s biggest union, which represents staff working for the National Blood Service (NBS) will resolutely oppose any privatisation of the NBS arguing that it goes against the very ethos of giving blood.

Unite’s national officer, Karen Reay said:

“People really do something amazing when they give blood. It is totally wrong for a private company to profit from those who volunteer to save lives. Unite is very disturbed at any suggestion of the private sector becoming involved in any elements of the NBS. The trade unions will resolutely oppose any outsourcing or privatisation. It is not in the best interests of the staff and patients.”

The NHS Blood and Transplant Service collects and supplies blood to hospitals in England and North Wales. The service employs 6,000 staff in regional blood centres and depots across England.
