Unite comment following Vince Cable’s evidence on Sheffield Forgemasters
Unite reaction to Vince Cable’s evidence to the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee on Sheffield Forgemasters.
Dougie Rooney, Unite’s national officer for Energy, who lobbied the previous Labour government to support Sheffield Forgemasters said:
“Labour offered the company a loan. The loan would have been an investment, it would of created hundreds of jobs and put the UK in a prime position to compete globally when the demand for parts for nuclear power stations is massive. By definition the money would be paid back plus the UK economy would benefit.
“Sheffield Forgemasters is a manufacturing company of the future which needed a helping hand. The ConDem’s decision is extremely short sighted. It could mean delays to the UK’s new nuclear build program and possibly even increase costs. “
