ABI: England fans urged to check their travel insurance cover before they go to the World Cup

With less than a month to go until kick off, the ABI is reminding the 20,000 English fans planning their trips to the World Cup in South Africa to ensure that they have the travel insurance that meets their needs.

Nick Starling, the ABI’s Director of General Insurance and Health, said:

“Making sure that you have the right travel insurance for your needs is crucial for every England fan travelling to South Africa. Whether travelling as part of a package or independently, all supporters should check their travel insurance before they go so that they fully understand what they are covered for, and to contact their travel insurer if they are unclear on any aspect of the cover.

“Don’t forget that the main purpose of travel insurance is to cover the costs of urgent medical treatment should you fall ill abroad, and any emergency medical repatriation back to the UK. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure you tell your travel insurer before you travel. The costs of medical treatment abroad and emergency medical repatriation can total thousands of pounds.”

Emergency medical repatriation back to the UK from outside Europe can cost at least £25,0001. Last year, travel insurers paid out over £4 million a week in medical costs in treating people who fell ill while abroad.
