Police Superindendents Association of England and Wales: Home secretary’s speech to police federation conference

Speaking today at the Police Federation Conference, Derek Barnett the President of the Police Superintendents’ Association of England and Wales said,

‘This was the first major speech by our new Home Secretary and I welcome her support and recognition of the difficult and demanding and often dangerous work of the police and I share her ambition to reduce bureaucracy to get officers back on the streets.

‘I look forward to learning the detail of the Government’s proposal for elected commissioners and offer my commitment that the Superintendents’ Association will positively contribute to finding solutions with the new Home Secretary and Police Minister.

‘The Home Secretary has made an impressive start and demonstrated her clear commitment to respecting and trusting police officers by returning charging powers for a range of offences. This will undoubtedly free up police officers to spend more time on patrol to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.’
