Unite: union anger at closure of United National Bank final salary pension

Unite members at The United National Bank are furious at the announcement to close it’s final salary scheme to all employees by 1st January 2010.

Staff at the bank, which has branches in: London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, Glasgow and Ilford, were told that the current final salary pension will be replaced with a substantially inferior defined contribution scheme.

Unite has deemed it unacceptable that there was no consultation with the union prior to the announcement.
Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer said: “Unite is bitterly disappointed that the United National Bank has chosen to close its final salary pension scheme without any prior consultation or negotiation with the union. This is devastating and comes as a further blow to a workforce that has already experienced staff reductions this year.

“Unite is seeking urgent talks with the bank in order to urge the company to re-consider this pension change. Unite the union will strongly resist the erosion of pension benefits for its members.”

The United National Bank is a Pakistani bank employing around 60 staff.
