National Caravan Council: New website and initiative to promote park home living
As National Housing Week concludes, a new campaign to promote park (‘mobile’) home living is being launched. The National Park Homes Council (NPHC), the trade association that represents the residential caravan industry, is spearheading the ‘Smarter Move’ campaign, which will include a new website (www.theparkhome.net) and supporting literature.
Park homes are particularly popular with older people, with many parks catering for the retired and semi-retired. These factory-built homes are now highly energy efficient – both in their construction methods and in terms of running costs.
“The latest parks homes are fantastic, with excellent build quality,'” says the NPHC’s Deputy Director General, Alicia Dunne. “Because they can be built to customers’ specifications, they are ideal for people with special needs due to limited mobility, for example. They can also be positively luxurious – a long way from their origins as distress housing.
“The campaign website www.theparkhome.net is designed to showcase to planners and the buying public the finest designs in modern mobile homes. It also explains in clear terms the unique legal status of park homes and shows where some of the best residential parks are located.”
The site contains a searchable list of licensed residential parks and a selection of Frequently Asked Questions about park homes. The site alerts potential buyers to the importance of making sure that the park home they choose is built to the British Standard (BS3632) and sited on a protected site, licensed for year-round residential use.
Currently around quarter of a million people live in park homes, across 2,000 sites in England, Scotland and Wales. Legal protection for them is similar to that of owners of leasehold flats.
