Unlock Democracy: Caps on donations: Brown and Cameron in “grubby political stitch-up”
Today the Liberal Democrats table amendments to the Political Parties and Elections Bill in the House of Lords, which would introduce a £50,000 cap on donations to political parties.
Donation caps are the official party policy of both opposition parties, yet the Conservatives and the Government have talked out the amendments at every stage of the Bill so far in a grubby political stitch-up.
Commenting ahead of Report Stage of the Political Parties and Elections Bill, Alexandra Runswick, Unlock Democracy’s Deputy Director said:
“Today’s Report Stage of the Political Parties and Elections Bill is an ideal time for politicians to put their money where their mouth is regarding Party Funding.
“The public support capping donations, as do a number of watchdogs such as The Electoral Commission and The Committee on Standards in Public Life.
“At a time when politicians are keen to talk about a ‘new kind of politics’, today’s debate will reveal if you can teach old politicians new tricks.”
The debate on the Political Parties and Elections Bill will commence in the House of Lords from 3pm today. The Marshalled List of Amendments can be found here.
