ABI: Government’s road safety plans must address young drivers, says the ABI
Responding to the publication today of Government proposals to reduce road accident casualty rates, and the outcome of the consultation on learning to drive, Nick Starling, the ABI’s Director of General Insurance and Heath, said:
“We support the Government’s aim to make our roads safer. Every day too many lives are still cut short or ruined on our roads. Changes in driver training and testing will help, but must go further to reduce the high level of casualties involving young people. Nearly a third of all deaths of 15-19 year olds occur on the roads. A minimum one-year learning period for young drivers, and restrictions on passengers carried by newly-qualified drivers, would reduce significantly this tragic waste of young life.”
